Ho-Sa Wang (b.1997) is a Taiwanese artist lives and works in London, currently in his final year at the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL).
Working in multi-panel formats, Hosa’s paintings often depict imaginary landscapes with varying perspectives emerging from technological advancements. Taking inspiration from Georges Bataille’s idea of spending excessive energy wastefully or violently to maintain stability, as discussed in The Accursed Share, Hosa frequently uses competitive sports as a starting point. His approach to painting aligns with what Fischli and Weiss refer to as “being a detective on canvas.” Hosa’s practice is both physical and sculptural. Movements such as rotating panels, performing or avoiding certain actions due to sports injuries, and vacillating between drawing and painting help him discover creative solutions to challenges that arise in the painting process.
In the Air, 2022, Oil on Canvas, 110 x 150 cm
In the Air is an exploration of surveillance through the lens of personal experience and urban landscapes. The scene unfolds along the dingy back alleys of Tottenham Court Road, where digital eyes glare unceasingly. These alleys, frequented by bin men, crackheads, drunken businessmen, and thieves, are bathed in an eerie atmosphere of scrutiny. Drawing inspiration from previously created collages, the artist crafts a complex and subtle composition that reflects on the pervasive presence of surveillance in modern society.
